Total. F**king. Fail. How Not To Mentor and Other Brave Mistakes

Image
We are going to finish strong in March. Thank you for taking the time to explore the many aspects of MENTORSHIP with me. I thought today it might be fun to debrief on a recent adventure where I totally blew it as a mentor and trusted ally. Total. F**king. Fail. I am committed to doing better. I thought I was going in as the teacher here but, in fact, I was the student. The Sky Is Just The Beginning

Image
I’m not gonna lie – I edited this speech. There it is. That’s the truth. I edited it because I called myself an “old lady” more than once in this talk. More than twice. That’s not going to fly! That is not kind to me; or true. So that’s that. Continuing with our exploration of mentorship this month, I was asked to speak to inspire young women in aviation and I came away completely inspired by them. What I wanted them to take with them:     1)  You are powerful and know you know how to feel and be fully empowered;     2)  You are valuable. And I AM talking about money so s tart asking for what you are worth;     3)  You have options – lots of them;     4)  The sky is not the limit – it’s just the beginning; and     5)  You are right on time! Friends Who Fly - Building Confidence Through Community

Image
In keeping with our exploration of mentorship, let's talk about building confidence through community. Why is mentorship important as a new pilot or student pilot? From time-building to confidence building, what are the benefits of a formal mentorship program from the perspective of both a mentor and a mentee (or two)? Today I am joined by Colin Williamson and Bill McMillan who are both members of the Victoria Flying Club’s mentorship program who are going to answer those questions. To find out more about Victoria Flying Club’s mentorship program: www.flyvfc.com To find out more about Ramona and what we are all up to at Ascend Legal 101 you can find us at: www.ascendlegalrecruiting.com . Mind The Gap with Mike Doiron, Aviation Consultant

Image
This guy loves aviation! Today I am speaking with Mike Doiron who has been involved in many aspects of aviation for 50 years. The truth is that this short introduction doesn’t scratch the surface of his career accomplishments and experience in aviation. Today we get into the gaps in flight training; concerns about the level of competency of new aviators; and how we address those concerns. We discuss the role of Transport Canada; the difference between Transport Canada of today and in the 1980’s and 90’s; the experience of today’s regulators; and what he would watch for if he was a regulator today. Mike started as a dispatcher and progressed to Chief Flight Instructor and Chief Pilot of the Moncton Flying Club. He spent 19 years with Transport Canada where he held various positions including Superintendent of Flight Training, Regional Director of System Safety and National Director of Aviation Safety Promotions. In 1998, he left the government to take the helm of the Moncton...

It Takes A Village

Image
"If you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go with others."   African Proverb It doesn't matter what industry you are in, guidance by a mentor can be a lifeline. Is this a dip or a dead end? A spin or a spiral dive? Sometimes you just need an outside perspective. I have had the privilege of having many wise people in every aspect of my life and wanted to share a piece I wrote about some of them eight years ago. (I cannot believe it was eight years ago already!)  This was originally  published on Friday, January 31, 2014 at:  https://iamtheredbootlady.blogspot.com/2014/01/it-takes-village.html and was published a second time in The Patrician the same year. Since this first writing and publishing MGen (Ret'd) Malcolm Scott Eichel CMM, CD passed away. He is remembered so fondly by everyone who has had the good fortune to meet him as a wonderful teacher and mentor - and a lot of fun! One of the people in this plane is a Retired Major General - and it's ...

Bill Yearwood - Getting It!

Image
The first time I read Bill Yearwood's book "Getting It: Learning from Aviation Accident Investigations" I was in full-on fight-or-flight for at least the first 80 pages. So, I read it again. Once called Marlboro Man for his risk taking in both aviation and auto racing, after assisting friends’ widows, he went to work to set safer standards. Canadian Pilots and AMEs will recognize Bill Yearwood as the definitive accident investigator for the Transportation Safety Board, awarded the Governor General’s citation for his years of dedication to bringing safety considerations for aviation front and centre. Well, here it is now in print from the investigator himself—truly, a text book on learning to stay safe in flight from the volume of data acquired from accident investigations. Bill’s book is titled: Getting It. We suggest that you will start to Get It from the very first page, in fact, we suspect your next walk-around will reflect the message you got from Getting It. Personal...

Regulator to Navigator

Image
How did Gordon Swanson move from regulating safety and compliance, to assisting clients navigate the rigorous and complex safety management requirements in the aviation and aerospace industries? Today we find out in this long form discussion. Gordon is a mind reader. He answered most of my questions before I even asked him and he hadn’t even seen the complex diagram I created before our interview. And unlike any of the other regulators that I know, he’s a human being. (That was a joke, I know other regulators who are mostly human but they’re not speaking to me now for sure.) He is clear in his intention to serve the aviation and aerospace industry in the best way that he can. His new venture, QSSA (Quality Systems and Safety in Aviation) has been established to provide a specialized consulting service aimed at providing assistance to States, Civil Aviation Authorities and aviation and aerospace service providers in mitigating risks through the implementation of State Safety Programs a...

Count Me In... And Other Revelations

Image
Trust is tricky. People are tricky. Right now there's a lot of uncertainty. Today we'd like to talk about the intention in building this community of ordinary people talking about extraordinary challenge and opportunity. We're addressing the feedback and letting you in on the conversations we are bringing to you in the next few weeks. Commercial aviation is so unsettled right now and there are a lot of people who want to change everything about aviation in Canada; a lot of which is manifesting in interesting ways in high-achievers. The jury’s still out. The business of law, however, has never been busier and the people I’m working with are hitting the wall. The HR piece is a whole animal of its own because the human resources part is about humans; and they are tricky. There is a very long back story to this project.  After having the same conversations over and over again with different people in different sectors, we sure discovered that we are so much more alike than diff...
