You Can't Sit In the Corner Office If There's No One to Build It

Ever wonder about skilled trades, apprenticeships, and the long-term job prospects that could be available to you? Me too. Skilled trades people are in demand. There's a massive shortage of skilled workers – which means jobs and opportunities for people with trades training, skills and certification. Today Brigadier-General (Retired) Gregory Matte and I discuss the history and issues surrounding apprenticeship programs, the benefits and pitfalls of different ideologies, and where industry goes from here.

This guy knows how to fly fast airplanes, make war and peace, speak four languages, AND he knows a lot about apprenticeship programs in Canada. In fact, he wrote a whole PhD thesis about it titled: “A Critical Analysis of Apprenticeship Programs in British Columbia”. His resume is ridiculous and I am waiting for the book. Really. Brigadier-General (Retired) Gregory Matte is a former CF-18 fighter pilot and a Fighter Weapons Instructor “Top Gun” graduate with extensive operational mission experience. He retired from the Canadian Forces in 2010 after 29 years of service, and moved on to an assignment as Director General Operations with Public Safety Canada. He was the first National Executive Director of the Helmets to Hardhats Canada program, and is currently the General Manager of the largest (and best) flight training facility on Vancouver Island. One of the most challenging parts of my business these days is  leading "well established" law firms into changing their corporate culture in order to retain and attract staff.  Perhaps its my geographic market? The demographics of my market? I don't really know the reason for the resistance to taking a look at firm or corporate culture and updating it, but it must be done. What I have outlined here will seem elementary to firms with stable structure and progressive firm culture but it needs to be outlined nonetheless. Anyone who has done any training with me will recognize our title today: focus, focus, focus. Usually we're talking about something legal or technical but today let's talk about staying creative and open when we have staffing shortages. How is your focus? Where is it? There are times, like now, when it looks like we have no options. I believe that we always have options. Unless you are hiring for a position that requires a very specific education and skill set, such as aircraft maintenance engineer, pilot, or brain surgeon, you want the right person with the right skills and education. If we're working in another industry that does not require such a specific skill set, then a lot of skill sets can be learned and we can use transferable skills or education to move somebody into another area. Bill Yearwood - Getting It!

The first time I read Bill Yearwood's book "Getting It: Learning from Aviation Accident Investigations" I was in full-on fight-or-flight for at least the first 80 pages. So, I read it again. Once called Marlboro Man for his risk taking in both aviation and auto racing, after assisting friends’ widows, he went to work to set safer standards. Canadian Pilots and AMEs will recognize Bill Yearwood as the definitive accident investigator for the Transportation Safety Board, awarded the Governor General’s citation for his years of dedication to bringing safety considerations for aviation front and centre. Well, here it is now in print from the investigator himself—truly, a text book on learning to stay safe in flight from the volume of data acquired from accident investigations.
