You know what I love about Christy Pratt? She is a true example of a forward thinking entrepreneur. And she is an inspiration to all of us who may think that because we are in a professional with fairly defined roles that there's no room to grow.  Christy shows us there is so much room for someone with a growth mindset.

Today I am joined by Christy Pratt who is a visionary business leader and realtime court reporter in Vancouver, British Columbia. She has reported several landmark aboriginal trials and constitutional challenges, many of them exceeding 150 trial days.

Before becoming a court reporter 25 years ago, Christy was a legal assistant and before that she worked in her family’s restaurant business. Christy ran her own court reporting firm in British Columbia for 15 years and she acquired four additional firms over the past 2 years. In July 2021, all five of these firms joined Veritext Legal Solutions who provide services across North America, and Christy is now the vice president for the Canadian Region.

Christy is passionate about mentorship, and she embraces a growth mindset. She works with an executive coach, and her word for 2022 is ‘mindful.’ She finds joy and balance in cooking and travel, particularly when blended together! She will be going to a cooking school in Italy in October with her partner Erik, who lives in Washington State.

One of the most challenging parts of my business these days is  leading "well established" law firms into changing their corporate culture in order to retain and attract staff.  Perhaps its my geographic market? The demographics of my market? I don't really know the reason for the resistance to taking a look at firm or corporate culture and updating it, but it must be done. What I have outlined here will seem elementary to firms with stable structure and progressive firm culture but it needs to be outlined nonetheless. Anyone who has done any training with me will recognize our title today: focus, focus, focus. Usually we're talking about something legal or technical but today let's talk about staying creative and open when we have staffing shortages. How is your focus? Where is it? There are times, like now, when it looks like we have no options. I believe that we always have options. Unless you are hiring for a position that requires a very specific education and skill set, such as aircraft maintenance engineer, pilot, or brain surgeon, you want the right person with the right skills and education. If we're working in another industry that does not require such a specific skill set, then a lot of skill sets can be learned and we can use transferable skills or education to move somebody into another area. Bill Yearwood - Getting It!

The first time I read Bill Yearwood's book "Getting It: Learning from Aviation Accident Investigations" I was in full-on fight-or-flight for at least the first 80 pages. So, I read it again. Once called Marlboro Man for his risk taking in both aviation and auto racing, after assisting friends’ widows, he went to work to set safer standards. Canadian Pilots and AMEs will recognize Bill Yearwood as the definitive accident investigator for the Transportation Safety Board, awarded the Governor General’s citation for his years of dedication to bringing safety considerations for aviation front and centre. Well, here it is now in print from the investigator himself—truly, a text book on learning to stay safe in flight from the volume of data acquired from accident investigations.
