Walking Her Talk - Aircraft Maintenance to Aviation Entrepreneur

After being silenced by “well meaning” people who presupposed that Trish’s clients would not share her values; and after being told that by speaking her truth her business would be ruined, Trish Machiri found the courage to let the words come again. After a literal break, she rose to build an aviation business, with a focus on safety, that is worthy of her best clients who not only share her values, but also her understanding that jets love to fly. It’s almost embarrassing how much of a fan-girl I am here because I admire Trish so much for her courage, tenacity, experience, and willingness to share despite all the people who told her all the ways she would be better off staying quiet. A short introduction here is not expansive enough to cover all the ground Trish and I covered together. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did.

One of the most challenging parts of my business these days is  leading "well established" law firms into changing their corporate culture in order to retain and attract staff.  Perhaps its my geographic market? The demographics of my market? I don't really know the reason for the resistance to taking a look at firm or corporate culture and updating it, but it must be done. What I have outlined here will seem elementary to firms with stable structure and progressive firm culture but it needs to be outlined nonetheless. Anyone who has done any training with me will recognize our title today: focus, focus, focus. Usually we're talking about something legal or technical but today let's talk about staying creative and open when we have staffing shortages. How is your focus? Where is it? There are times, like now, when it looks like we have no options. I believe that we always have options. Unless you are hiring for a position that requires a very specific education and skill set, such as aircraft maintenance engineer, pilot, or brain surgeon, you want the right person with the right skills and education. If we're working in another industry that does not require such a specific skill set, then a lot of skill sets can be learned and we can use transferable skills or education to move somebody into another area. Bill Yearwood - Getting It!

The first time I read Bill Yearwood's book "Getting It: Learning from Aviation Accident Investigations" I was in full-on fight-or-flight for at least the first 80 pages. So, I read it again. Once called Marlboro Man for his risk taking in both aviation and auto racing, after assisting friends’ widows, he went to work to set safer standards. Canadian Pilots and AMEs will recognize Bill Yearwood as the definitive accident investigator for the Transportation Safety Board, awarded the Governor General’s citation for his years of dedication to bringing safety considerations for aviation front and centre. Well, here it is now in print from the investigator himself—truly, a text book on learning to stay safe in flight from the volume of data acquired from accident investigations.
