Remembering Your Unique Presence

Image
I think she might know something I don't. Meet  Sophie. I met Sophie and her Mom when I was on safari at the mall looking for the perfect pair of red boots.   It was an absolute joy to listen to Sophie sing the praises of her lovely little red boots in her equally lovely British accent while her mother and I tried on the same boots - hers in black, mine in red.   You know what I love about little girls?   They know who they are.   I have vivid memories of being Sophie's age and knowing exactly who I was: all the office supplies I spent my allowance on; second grade entrepreneurial ventures; back-yard shows; high-flying tricks that made my mother crazy; the verve. But what I remember most about when I was Sophie's age is that I wanted to be Samantha from Bewitched. She had everything I could see in my future: a great hairdo, magic, a husband named Darrin, and she could fly. Samantha had unique presence. Fast f...

Chasing The Needle

Image
“Your quest for perfection is throwing your balance.”  Sean Tyrrell, Victoria Flying Club Instructor and Resident Wise Man Originally published: December 6, 2013 -  http://iamtheredbootlady.blogspot.com/2013/12/chasing-needle.html With the benefit of hindsight I say to my 42 year old self: You're gonna be fine Darling... and also... It's still a fine line between brilliance and crazy. With my flight test quickly approaching, most days I feel as if I am approaching my flight training with new found confidence – until I accidentally find myself stepping on the crack in the ice.  It’s a fine line between brilliance and crazy. I am reminded of my return to flight training after an extended period away.  Let's just say I have a lot of hours in my log book because I had to redo the entire syllabus.  And I think back to a beautiful autumn day last year, when the man sitting beside me in the cockpit of Victor November Uniform had no idea what he was saying or who h...

Walking Her Talk with Trish Machiri

Image
Walking Her Talk - Aircraft Maintenance to Aviation Entrepreneur A fter being silenced by “well meaning” people who presupposed that Trish’s clients would not share her values; and after being told that by speaking her truth her business would be ruined, Trish Machiri found the courage to let the words come again. After a literal break, she rose to build an aviation business, with a focus on safety, that is worthy of her best clients who not only share her values, but also her understanding that jets love to fly . It’s almost embarrassing how much of a fan-girl I am here because I admire Trish so much for her courage, tenacity, experience, and willingness to share despite all the people who told her all the ways she would be better off staying quiet. A short introduction here is not expansive enough to cover all the ground Trish and I covered together. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did. Y ou can connect with Trish at www.charterly.ca or on LinkedIn. To find out m...

Setting The Intention: Speak Your Truth

Image
Speak ing your truth. What does that mean to you? When I was 38, I got a tattoo on my back that said: “Speak Y our T ruth”. I didn’t want it to be visible to everyone , but I wanted to be able to see it when I looked in the mirror. I wanted it to be a reminder. And then I ignored it. N ow my friends, it’s GAME ON! S ome truths must still be spoken – let’s set that intention and see where that leads us. Total. F**king. Fail. How Not To Mentor and Other Brave Mistakes

Image
We are going to finish strong in March. Thank you for taking the time to explore the many aspects of MENTORSHIP with me. I thought today it might be fun to debrief on a recent adventure where I totally blew it as a mentor and trusted ally. Total. F**king. Fail. I am committed to doing better. I thought I was going in as the teacher here but, in fact, I was the student. Teaching old dogs... I mean lawyers... new tricks!

Image
Photo by John Cameron on Unsplash There is a lot of value in this post.  I know you can pull it off - because you have to. One of the most challenging parts of my business these days is  leading "well established" law firms into changing their corporate culture in order to retain and attract staff.  Perhaps its my geographic market? The demographics of my market? I don't really know the reason for the resistance to taking a look at firm or corporate culture and updating it, but it must be done. What I have outlined here will seem elementary to firms with stable structure and progressive firm culture but it needs to be outlined nonetheless. We wouldn't be talking about it if it wasn't a thing. I recognize it can be tricky for lawyers because their focus is on the practice of law and we have been doing things a certain way for a long time.  It is easy to become complacent in an environment where we are not forced to keep up - but now it's game on .   We...

The Sky Is Just The Beginning

Image
I’m not gonna lie – I edited this speech. There it is. That’s the truth. I edited it because I called myself an “old lady” more than once in this talk. More than twice. That’s not going to fly! That is not kind to me; or true. So that’s that. Continuing with our exploration of mentorship this month, I was asked to speak to inspire young women in aviation and I came away completely inspired by them. What I wanted them to take with them:     1)  You are powerful and know you know how to feel and be fully empowered;     2)  You are valuable. And I AM talking about money so s tart asking for what you are worth;     3)  You have options – lots of them;     4)  The sky is not the limit – it’s just the beginning; and     5)  You are right on time!
